Abstract

This paper discussed about failure on the vehicle rear axle shaft which made from medium carbon steel S43C. The purpose of this study was to find out the root cause of the failure and provide prevention solutions when a similar case occur in the same component or material. In order to solve these problems, several examinatios were conducted such as macro structure observation by stereo microscope, metallography by optical microscopy (OM), fractography on the fracture surface of the component by scanning electron microscope (SEM), hardness test by Vicker's, and the analysis of chemical composition by using optical emission spectroscopy (OES). The fractograph result show that the fracture surface is a type of premature damage or the fracture without plastic deformation. Microstructure shows the ferrite phase as grain boundaries of the martensite phase. This condition reduced a resistance of material during impact loading especially at high stress concentration area. In the end when the impact occurred, strength of rear axle component became poor when compared to design property of that material.
