Abstract

The recent paper reports the effect of ECAP at liquid nitrogen temperature on the mechanical properties of Al-Mg-Si (Al 6061) alloys and compared to the room temperature ECAP. The ECAP experiments with route Bc were conducted on solution treated alloys using dies with internal channel angel of 120o for 1 to 4 passes. The XRD (x-ray diffraction) analysis showed that after ECAP the peak broadening occurred on all peaks and the peak intensity strength of (111) plane was highest as it considered as the active slip plane in the Al 6061 alloys. At high deformation strain (pass 3 and 4) the ECAP at liquid nitrogen temperature resulted in higher tensile strength and higher elongation to break compared to those of room temperature ECAP. Further, the dimples of tensile fracture surface of Al 6061 processed by liquid nitrogen temperature ECAP have mean size smaller than that of Al 6061 processed by room temperature ECAP.
