Islamic education holds a strategic position in the process of shaping students’ character so that they develop into individuals with noble morals, tolerant attitudes, and the ability to live harmoniously within a pluralistic society. In the Indonesian context, which is characterized by cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity, the development of Islamic education oriented toward multicultural values becomes a fundamental necessity to cultivate awareness of the importance of respecting differences. This study examines the implementation of multiculturalism-based Islamic education as an effort to foster students’ attitudes of tolerance at the junior secondary school level, with a case context at SMP Miftahul Huda Musri Pangandaran. The findings indicate that the application of this approach is realized through the integration of tolerance values in Islamic Religious Education learning, teachers’ role modeling in building mutually respectful relationships with students, social habituation practices that encourage empathy, cooperation, and mutual respect, as well as the organization of inclusive religious activities that emphasize universal human values. The successful implementation is supported by teachers’ commitment, the leadership role of the school principal, and a school environment that is conducive to diversity. Meanwhile, the challenges encountered include differences in students’ religious understanding backgrounds and the limited competence of some teachers in optimally applying multicultural approaches. Overall, multiculturalism-based Islamic education is proven to contribute significantly to the formation of tolerant attitudes, the enhancement of respect for diversity, and the strengthening of religious moderation among students. Therefore, its development needs to be continuously promoted through strengthening teacher capacity, curriculum renewal, and educational policies that support the creation of an inclusive and equitable school culture.
