This article discusses the Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij (KPM) as a Netherlands shipping company in the Netherlands East Indies that began operating in 1891 for the economic interests of the Kingdom of the Netherlands at its colony as a way to win the growing competition on sea trade monopoly over the Indies against other European countries. KPM became a significant shipping company and continued to grow in the Dutch East Indies alongside with the Netherlands East Indies Colonial Government as important tools for Dutch imperialism until the collapse of the Dutch East Indies in 1942. The development can be measured by the expansion of the shipping route network connecting the Netherlands East Indies and foreign ports, additional fleets, expansion of the shipping service business, and the dominance of KPM's monopoly over shipping activities in the Netherlands East Indies.This research explains the development of KPM and its shipping network for Dutch imperial interests, including its dynamics while operating in the Netherlands Indies from 1891 until 1942 as a study of Indonesian maritime history during the colonial period.
