Abstract

In 2020, 84,03% of recent migration in Indonesia occurred on Jawa, Sumatra, and Kalimantan islands. Geographically, these three islands are included in the western region of Indonesia. High migration rates can positively and negatively impact migrant destination areas. The existence of negative impacts from the high rate of recent in-migration is a problem that must be anticipated so they are not more dominant than the positive impacts. The aim of this research is to analyze the general picture of recent in-migration in districts and cities in western Indonesia in 2020 and the factors that influence it. This study used data from the Migration and Population Welfare Statistics publication and dynamic tables with several subjects on the Statistics Indonesia laman. The results of parameter testing in the spatial error regression model using the generalized methods of moment estimation show that the variables unemployment rate, minimum wage, and the percentage of poor people have a significant partial negative effect on the rate of recent in-migration. Meanwhile, long-term school expectations and the percentage of the population that accesses the internet have a significant partial positive effect on the rate of recent in-migration. The results indicate the importance of cooperation between neighbouring regional governments to minimize the negative impacts of recent in-migration.
