Abstract

This paper describes the languages used by the costumers of three modern markets in Padang in communicating with their family's members relating with the existence of sales promotion girls at the time they were communicating. These languages are Minangkabau language (local language) and bahasa Indonesia (the national language). The Minangkabau people in Padang usually use Minangkabau language in communicating with their families. Since the sales promotion girls in modern market use bahasa Indonesia, it is a problem to them to use bahasa Indonesia or Minangkabau language to his families in front of the promotion girls. This research is a descriptive one and use quantitative and qualitative analysis. There are three categories age of people that are observed. These are adults, teenagers, and children. The research shows that in participation of sales promotion girl in their communication, the customers change the language they use to their family's members, from bahasa Minangkabau to bahasa Indonesia. The adult categories is the highest level on this.
