Abstract

This study aims to discuss the role of GDP per capita, trade openness, the proportion of industrial sector, population density, and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) per capita on energy intensity in Indonesia. The panel data analysis was applied to analyze the effect of those variables on energy intensity across 33 provinces in Indonesia during 2008-2015. The results of this study indicate that energy intensity in Indonesia provinces is highly determined by regional economic activity. The role of the industrial sector in determining energy intensity is quite dominant, supported by findings on the trade openness and FDI per capita. Therefore, policy in the industrial sector will significantly affect the attainment of the Government’ target in reducing 1% of energy intensity per year.
