Abstract

The Indonesian archaeological research institute has existed for more than a century, beginning with the establishment of the Oudheidkundige Dienst in 1913, which has since evolved into Puslit Arkenas overseeing ten regional Balai Arkeologi. With its long history, the institute is expected to make significant contributions to the nation, particularly through scientific publications. For decades, scientific journals operated under a print-based paradigm, but recent regulations from LIPI and Dikti have shifted the focus toward e-journal management. This shift has had a positive impact on the global dissemination of Indonesian scientific research. Since 2016, ten e-journals developed by Puslit Arkenas and the Balai Arkeologi have been active online. Although the current state of Indonesian archaeology e-journals has yet to reach the ideal standards expected of a national research institution, findings from this study show that these journals have the potential to grow into internationally recognized publications. However, several technical and non-technical challenges remain. It is expected that Puslit Arkenas and the Balai Arkeologi will collaborate in developing strategies to achieve national accreditation in the near future and international recognition in the long term. Ultimately, the most significant contribution a national research institute can make is to have its research published in scientific journals indexed by one of the two globally reputable institutions—Thomson Reuters/Web of Science or Scopus.
